I learned it from my mother

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

I was doing something the other day and realized “wow! I knew how to do that because my mom did it like that.” And then I thought it would be nice to blog about things that my mom taught me since this is her birthday, (Oct 25) and it would be a lovely way to say “HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM!”

Funny thing is…I don’t remember what the original thought was that started me thinking about writing the blog in the first place! Let me see. Was it …

I learned how to cook wholesome meals from my mother? —hmmmm, no that’s not it.

Was it…

I learned how to clean the house? —uh..no again.

Was it…

I learned how to make my own clothes? —negatory on that one

SHOOT!! WHAT WAS IT?

Well, the original thought will have to be another blog. But some of the things I did come up with were…

I learned how to sew a button from my mother.

I learned how to make caramel corn

I learned how to change a diaper

I learned how to make cookies

I learned how to pour peroxide over a cut to watch the white bubbles come up

I learned how to fill plastic Easter eggs with candy and hide them for the “little ones” (one candy for the egg. one for my mouth)

I learned how to wrap Christmas presents at 10pm Christmas Eve

I learned how to go back to the cheap hair place and demand that my horrible perm be straightened back out–at no extra cost.

Aside from the early life skills learned as a child, I learned a really important thing from my mother.

I learned how to be a giver to my child. To make sure he has what he needs. I know my mom loves to give good gifts to her kids. (at least to my baby brothers who always get…. I mean–just kidding!) Seriously, she is a giver. If we are over for dinner, she’ll send us home with something. When she helped me out after I had the baby, she would bring over some diapers, outfits, food, whatever. That’s just who she is.

Happy Birthday Mom! I love you very much!

(for my mother and friend, Karen Stippich: I love you mom and I don’t tell you enough how thankful I am for you.)

2 under 2

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Heh, don’t panic. This is not my way of announcing to my few readers that I am pregnant. I AM NOT (let me clarify that…before my mother has a heart attack).

This past weekend I watched my 19 month old Nephew Vann while Erik, Roseann, Skylar and Trinity went to a wedding in Alabama. First, the wedding was on Friday due to a “Roll Tide” football game on Saturday (only those football fans would understand. zzzzzzzz.. ooops. sorry, talking about American Football puts me to sleep.) Ok, so there I was with my 19 month old nephew and my 4 month old. It wasn’t bad, actually. Only difficult when they both needed to nap at the same time or needed some lovin’ at the same time. Luckily Kayle was really good and Vann is easy to put down for a nap. Kayle is not that easy to put down for a nap, but that only really became an issue Saturday. (more…)

Addictions

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

I just started this new job. Well, it is doing email support for a local company. The training sessions have been going good and I work about 2 hours a day at the moment while trying to juggle the baby. You know what I mean.

Anyhow, even though I am slowly grasping the job (learning the why’s and how’s of the program) there is an excitement because it has to do with problem solving. Sometimes you have to do some detective work to try to figure out what the person is doing and try to decode what they are asking. I like problem solving. So therefore, even though I ask a lot of questions to my supervisor (and she claims I don’t drive her nuts) and sometimes I get frustrated with myself for not catching on quicker, I am becoming addicted to answering the emails. Even when I have met m quota for the day or when I am all caught up, I find myself really wanting to stay in the moment and learn more.

It is actually a good feeling. Until I (more…)

Boys will be boys

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

Hopefully you will get a kick out of this one. Today I received an email from my friend Karyn regarding her day with her 3 boys. They are absolutely adorable. (Though I am sure she didn’t think so at the time). Now mind you, she is leaving tomorrow to go to New York for a cousin’s wedding. Steve will be home with the boys for a little “dad time.”

Note: Justin and Cameron are twins turning 4 yrs old this December. Cason is 10 months old.

Anyhow, at her expense, I chuckled. If it can bring amusement to someone else, then it is well worth the post (plus she gave me permission!) What a day! Must have been a full moon or something!

Writing sample exhibit A

Monday, October 8th, 2007

Recently I was asked to do a writing sample for a email support, work from home venture. After looking up on the internet for clarification on “do I have to use subject and verb in all sentences of a professional writing sample?” (and that is how I entered it in google…almost) I read that “each sentence needs a subject and a verb.”

Now, that is not normally how I write, as you can tell if you read my blogs or text messages. But for the purpose of being in a professional environment, I can definitely do that. Plus, I used to want to be an English teacher back in High School because I really enjoyed my English Teachers (Ms. Lacy, Ms. Kimberlin, Ms. Waller) and actually had a chance to tell the first two about that —well, sometime back.

So proofreading isn’t exactly a favorite but I usually can spot typos while reading things (unless it is my own work, which usually I don’t re-read! Just kidding). Now I am not saying I catch everything. But sometimes I just find enjoyment in looking for mess-ups. In other people’s stuff.

But I digress, the main point of this post was to enter that sample. I was kinda dreading the whole task because it meant sitting down and really thinking about it. Once I got started, I really got in to it. Seems a little elementary though — had flashbacks of 5th grade writing assignments where the topic sentence introduces your 3 body paragraphs and then you tie it all up with a closing paragraph. All with keeping the readers interest in mind.

So without further delay…here is that sample (more…)

Conrad and I met Melodie over at East Cobb Park for some cute pictures before the baby. Little did we know that we did know that he would come so soon after the day we took these!

Operation Organization Part #?

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

I think this is really the 2nd entry in my Operation Organizational Adventure…sadly I am not sure. Sign of not being organized? Heh, I could just go back through the blogs. Anyhow, I wanted to report to you, my faithful blog readers (the three of you) because I said I would.

The closet: Yep. Started putting maternity clothes in a box and also boxing up Kayle’s clothes that he (sniff sniff) has already (boo hoo) outgrown (wiping tear). Wow. Can’t believe he is 15 weeks old already. My baby is growing up! (composing myself). It is a process, the closet I mean. Well, growing up is too. I have not finished it but hopefully by this evening I will feel like I have completed the first phase.

The desk: ahhh yikes. Scarier than a haunted house at Halloween. Ok. well, I did go through some papers and clean off a spot (moved it all underneath) so this will take a little longer. Progress: I have put some things into folders to help keep track. And I have been looking into online calendars to help with my to do list.

I feel in the mood to clean. Which, right there, is half the battle. Wouldn’t you agree! Motivation is key. So let me quit this before the mood changes! (um, honey, I am talking about the cleaning mood. no need to rush home!)
